Construction Supervision

Summary

During the reporting period 150.5m of Evacuation Tunnel and 162.8m of Main Tunnel Top Heading was excavated, giving a total length of 1507.5m of Evacuation Tunnel and 1396.5m of Main Tunnel Top Heading excavated to date.

Bench excavation continued with 320.42m being excavated on the West Side and 200.82m excavated on the East Side.

Tunnel lining commenced with 48m of tunnel completed.

Excavation is advancing well and compared to the original schedule shows the Main Tunnel being four weeks behind programme and the Evacuation Tunnel ten weeks. At current rates excavation should be back on programme by early 2003.

Tunnel Lining commenced late, but three pours were completed within a one week period, proving the contractor can hit the required progress rate.

A fatal accident occurred on the 31st October 2002 whilst permanent steel ribs were being erected for the tunnel lining.

  • Evacuation Tunnel

A total of 150.5m of Evacuation Tunnel was excavated from St. 1+357 to St 1+507.5 over the reporting period. Giving a total length of 1507.5m of tunnel excavated to date. The items carried out during the month can be quantified as follows:

Blasting: 9830 kg

Shotcrete 50mm thickness:  1627.5 m2

  • Main Tunnel

A total of 162.8m of Main Tunnel Top Heading was excavated over the reporting period, giving a total length of 1396.5m of Main Tunnel Top Heading excavated to date.

Face No.7 - 162.8m of Top Heading excavated from St. 1+233.7 to St. 1+396.5

Bench excavation

- 229.52m of bench excavated from St. 0+211.88 to St. 0+441.4 and 90.9m from St. 0+710 to St. 0+619.1 (West side)

- 100.37m of bench excavated from St. 0+324.63 to St. 0+425 and 100.45m from St. 0+710 to ST. 0+609.55 (East side)
