Construction Supervision

Summary

During the reporting period 152.8m of Evacuation Tunnel and 149.8m of Main Tunnel Top Heading was excavated, giving a total length of 1357m of Evacuation Tunnel and 1233.7m of Main Tunnel Top Heading excavated to date.

The soft ground invert was completed and work commenced with the bench excavation from St. 0+100.

The erection of the concrete lining form was completed and the first pour of the cut and cover portal section carried out.

Overall excavation is advancing well and compared to the original schedule shows the Main Tunnel being five weeks behind programme and the Evacuation Tunnel ten weeks. At current rates excavation should be back on programme by early 2003.

Tunnel Lining will now commence in mid-October, there will be a delay in the start date due to the late delivery of waterproof membrane from Italy.

  • Evacuation Tunnel

A total of 152.8m of Evacuation Tunnel was excavated from St. 1+204.2 to St 1+357 over the reporting period. Giving a total length of 1357m of tunnel excavated to date. The items carried out during the month can be quantified as follows:

Blasting: 9775 kg

Shotcrete 50mm thickness:  1632.4 m2

  • Vehicle cross passage at St. 1+097.825

The vehicle cross passage was excavated a total length of 21.5m from the Evacuation Tunnel. The items carried out during the month can be quantified as follows:

Blasting: 2526 kg

Shotcrete for temporary support 50mm thick: 239m2

SN rockbolts 2 m long: 2 pieces

SN rockbolts 4m long: 4 pieces

  • Main Tunnel

A total of 149.8m of Main Tunnel Top Heading was excavated over the reporting period, giving a total length of 1233.7m of Main Tunnel Top Heading excavated to date.

Face No.7 – 149.8m of Top Heading excavated from St. 1+083.9 to St. 1+233.7

Face No. 1 Invert – 17m of invert excavated from St. 0+083 to St. 0+100

Bench excavation – 43 of bench excavated from St. 0+143 to St. 0+100

– 39.88m of bench excavated from St. 0+172 to St. 0+211.88 (West side)

– 152.63m of bench excavated from St. 0+172 to St. 0+324.63 (East side)
