VN company adds colour to new tunnel

Date: June 07, 2004

HA NOI — Local manufacturer LQ Joton said last Friday it beat 10 international bidders to a contract to paint the northern part of the Hai Van tunnel.

The company has already begun work on the VND2 billion (US$127,000) project – which includes painting 20,000sq.m of the tunnel and 20 tonnes of paint – to be completed next month, according to its general director, Tang Thien Dinh.

More than 100 workers are working on the job, he said.

"We are very proud to be [associated with] Viet Nam’s largest tunnel and it will help us expand our business worldwide," he said.

The $251 million tunnel, in the central city of Da Nang, will become one of the world’s 30 largest tunnels when complete, measuring 6.7km long, 11.9m wide, with a clearance of 4.95m, and with a 4.7m-wide emergency tunnel.

Began in August 2000, it is due to be completed this year and will be capable of taking 30-tonne vehicles. — VNS
