South East Asia’s longest tunnel will provide crucial highway link

Zurich, Switzerland, May 6, 2003 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced today that it has won a US$ 11 million contract for electrification of the Hai Van Pass Tunnel in Vietnam, the longest highway tunnel in Southeast Asia, and a crucial link in the country’s national highway system. This contract is in addition to a US$ 5 million contract awarded to ABB in 2001 for delivery of main substation for the Hai Van Pass Tunnel.
Under the terms of contract, signed with Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport and Communications, ABB will be responsible for overall project management and engineering, and will supply power and automation technology equipment. ABB will work with Kinden of Japan and the Vietnam Industrial Construction Corporation (VINAINCON) to meet the special requirements of the project.

Under this contract, Kinden will supply cables, lighting systems and with VINAINCON, will provide civil and installation works. The project is scheduled for completion by April 2005.

Under the terms of these contracts, ABB will source 110/22kV main substation, which includes 110 and 22kV gas insulated switchgears, two 10MVA transformers, cast resin distribution transformers, low voltage switchboards and SCADA system for power distribution protection, control and monitoring.

The contract further includes eight power distribution substations inside the tunnel, fire alarm and detection, radio rebroadcast, video monitoring and telecommunication systems as well as lighting and traffic control and operation systems.

This agreement highlights ABB’s strength in substation project management and experience in major electrification projects worldwide. ABB is active in this area throughout Asia as well, having recently announced its largest ever order to supply medium voltage power technology products for mass transit projects in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, China.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impacts. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 135,000 people worldwide.

Background on Hai Van Pass Tunnel

The tunnel project encompasses a two-lane highway of 12,182 meters in total length. It includes a 6,274-meter long tunnel section, bridge sections including eight bridges of 1,635 meters in total length, and highway sections of 4,273 meters in total length. In parallel with the main tunnel, an evacuation tunnel will be constructed. The ventilation system is a jet-fan longitudinal ventilation system with an intermediate ventilation adit and three electrostatic precipitators. At the south tunnel portal, a tunnel operation building will be constructed together with a 110/22kV substation from which the required power for tunnel operation will be supplied.
