The Song
Da Construction Corporation reports that 4,088m of tunnel at the south
end of the Hai Van Pass will be finished by late October.
The work
includes a 2,400m long by 13m wide main tunnel and a 2,400m long by
5.1m wide evacuation tunnel.
The entire
project, a 12.18km complex that will link Lang Co in Thua Thien-Hue
Province with Da Nang, is due for completion next year.
The 6.2km,
two-lane main tunnel and its access roads to Highway 1 are designed
to reduce the road distance over the Hai Van Pass by 9km, accommodating
vehicles of up to 30 tonnes, travelling at 80km per hour.
The company
says that since construction began two years ago, workers have unearthed
17,789 cu.m of soil, 278,144 cu.m of rock, and 480,000 cu.m of soil
of the tunnel gates groundwork.
The corporation
has poured 16,000 cu.m of concrete for the main tunnel. It was also
asked by the Ministry of Transport to build 900m of the tunnel at the
north end, including 450m of the main tunnel and 450m of the evacuation
tunnel.
The work
has been conducted under the close supervision of international and
domestic experts from the Japanese Nippon Koei, American Louis Berger
and Vietnamese Tedi companies. VNS
