Date: July 04, 2003

Song Da Construction Corporation has completed its work on the southern section of the underground tunnel through the Hai Van Pass four months ahead of schedule.

The work, part of the 1B package, was completed at 5pm on June 30, with completion of drilling for the southern end of the tunnel. This has a total length of 4,800 metres, including the main tunnel which is of 2,400 metres long, 13 metres wide and 7.8 metres high. The emergency tunnel is 2,400 metres long, 5.1 metres wide and 4.2 metres high.

The work was carried out under strict supervision of Japanese consultant firm Nippon Koei and US consultant firm Louis Berger and Vietnamese consultant firm Tedi.

The work was scheduled to be completed by October, 2003.

Song Da Corporation has been awarded another 900 metres in the northern end of the tunnel of the 1A package for further work, thanks to its quality service performed for package 1B in the southern end of the tunnel. The work includes 450 metres of main tunnel and 450 metres of emergency tunnel, having similar sizes with the southern tunnels. This is for technical completion and operation of the tunnel in October 2003.
