Workers
have dug more than 2,300 metres into the mountain from the north and
2,000 from the south, according to officials from the project management
unit.
The 12.18km
tunnel project, including the 6.7km tunnel itself, will link Lang Co
Bridge on National Highway No. 1A in Thua Thien-Hue Provinces
Phu Loc District in the north with the Cau Den Bridge near Da Nang city
in the south.
The scheme,
scheduled to be completed in mid-2004, will reduce the journey across
Hai Van Pass by 9 km and accommodate vehicles weighing up to 30 tonnes.
The tunnel
project has a total cost of US$251 million (VND3.7 trillion). Of this
amount, 85 per cent has come from Official Development Assistance loans
provided by the Japan Bank for International Co-operation.
Hai Van
Pass Tunnel will operate as a toll-road next year, said officials from
the management unit. VNS
