At the
south end of the tunnel, a Vietnamese-South Korean joint venture has
completed 1,700m of the main tunnel and 1,750m of the evacuation tunnel,
while at the north end a Vietnamese-Japanese joint venture has finished
2,050m of the main tunnel and 2,030m of the evacuation tunnel.
The contractors
have also completed 90 per cent of the ventilation shaft.
The 12.18km
Hai Van Pass Tunnel will connect Lang Co in Thua Thien-Hue Province
with Da Nang.
The 6.2km,
two-lane main tunnel and its access roads to Highway No.1 have been
designed to reduce the road distance over the Hai Van Pass by 9km, accommodating
vehicles of up to 30 tonnes, travelling at 80km per hour.
The Government-approved
design also provides for a 4.7m-wide evacuation tunnel in case of emergencies,
which will be linked to the main tunnel by 15 cross-passages.
The Hai
Van Pass Tunnel will be Southeast Asias first combined road, tunnel
and bridge complex when the project is completed in late 2004.
