Workers and Employer at North Haivan Pass Tunnel

LOOKING FOR COMMOND GROUND

Date:August 8, 2000

Haivan Pass Tunnel is under the speed construction stage befor erainy season, however, since 7:00 p.m. on August 5 till now, more than 100 workers working at Haivan Pass Tunnel - North Site for JV of Hazama and Cienco 6 went on strike. The construction has been stopped by 4 continuous shifts.

According to requirements of the workers to Board of Management of Hazama-Cienco6, there is the fact that beside of reduction of salary of 1 hour/shift (about VND 10,000), some workers working for more than 1 year were promised to increase their salary, but the company didn't keep their promise. The treatment to the labour is also one of pressing issues. Beside of the case that one foreign specialist hit Mr. Dinh Xuan (54 years old) crooking his rib at the end of April 2002 just because the reason of "making suggestion", many others are mistreated, and threatened… The deeper the tunnel goes, the more dangerous poisonous and less oxygen it will be, but the workers are not well-equipped with the safety facilities. When the workers demanded, they were supplied, but with their salary deducted by higher than market price.

After instected site, Mr. Pham Van Duoc, Manager of Economy-Policy Department of Labour Union of Thua Thien - Hue Province said "This regrettable event happened because there has not been the understanding between workers and employer. Whether the decision on deduction is right or not, we will consider it carefully, but it is obvious that the sudden announcement has created a trustration to employees. Because it is one of Key national projects, we expect the workers continue working to assure the construction schedule".

Meeting between worker's representative and employer is expected to be held in the nearest future to solve the obstacles.
