Hai Van Pass tunnel makes solid progress

(Date:July 15, 2002. Source: Vietnam News)

HA NOI — The construction of a tunnel through Hai Van Pass in central Viet Nam is progressing smoothly and is well on course for its scheduled completion next year.

The project includes a main tunnel and a rescue tunnel, with a length of 6.4 km long, from Lang Co in Phu Loc District of the central province of Thua Thien-Hue to the Lien Chieu Industrial Zone in Da Nang city.

By June end, 2,095 m of the main tunnel and 2,246 m of the rescue tunnel was dug, or one third of its total envisaged span.

Construction is being undertaken by Japan’s Hazama and Viet Nam’s Civil Engineering Corporation (CIENCO 6) at the northern end, and the Republic of Korea’s Dong Ah and the local Song Da Construction Corporation at the southern end.

The main tunnel is 11.5m wide and has two lanes that will permit vehicles to ply at 80 km an hour; the rescue tunnel runs alongside and is connected to it by branches, spaced at 400m intervals.

The 1,032 billion VND (73.7 million USD) project is funded by the State exchequer and loans from the Japanese Bank for International Co-operation and is the country’s first road tunnel to receive technical and financial assistance from international financial organisations.

Once completed, the Hai Van tunnel is expected to improve traffic in the area as well as in the Asian sub-region. — VNS
