Soft

Project Management Unit 85 has been forced to postpone digging a section
of the southern end of the main tunnel under Hal Van Pass after two
months of grappling with soft earth.
Small
cave-ins have been a frequent occurrence when attempting to dig the
section since early September even though every half a meter has been
reinforced with concrete. The contractor has so far been able to dig
only 30 meters into the mountain for the main tunnel. .
The
auxiliary tunnel on the contrary has progressed 174 meters, with some
six meters excavated every day due to favorable geological conditions.
To
literally get around the problem with the main tunnel, a bypass will
be dug from a point 200 meters into the auxiliary tunnel to allow work
to resume on the other side of the weak section, which will be finished
later after consulting foreign experts.
This
is the most feasible way to keep to schedule, according to the unit.
At
the northerm end, the main tunnel has progressed 200 meters, the auxiliary
tunnel 320 meters and the ventilation tunnel 340 meters. At the current
rate of five meters every day, the digging at this end should be completed
ahead of schedule.
