Excavation works for the North section of the tunnel through Hai Van pass kicked off

Excavation works for the North section of the tunnel through Hai Van pass was kicked off on April20 in Loc Hai commune, Phu Loc district, Thua Thien Hue province.

North Tunnel Section consists of construction of a 3,365m long 80-sq.m main tunnel, a 3,365-m long 15-sq.m evacuation tunnel, seven cross-passageways, a 138-m long electrostatic precipitator, a 1,565m long ventilation adit and a 85m approach road. To make the entrance to the tunnel, workers underwent hard weather condition, excavating about 4 hundred thousand cubic meters of land and rock.

The 6.4km tunnel will be bored through Hai Van mountain pass from Lang Co Bridge in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue, to Lien Chieu Industrial Zone in Da Nang port city, and will cut travel times between Hue and Da Nang considerably.

The construction is due to be completed by 2003, when it will provide a major economic boost to central Viet Nam with flow-on effects for the whole sub-Asian region./.
